Why this day? This is the day the name-day calendar sets aside for Saint Gilbert of Neuffontaines.
An Auvergne lord of the 12th century, he lived in France before dedicating himself to religious foundation. After a disastrous return from a crusade, he redistributed his wealth to the poor and founded two abbeys, becoming their first abbot and placing his wife and daughter at their head.
What stays with us: One can choose to turn a personal failure into a concrete project of solidarity. This life shows that it is possible to renounce power to build places of welcome and care, out of pure generosity.
